Après avoir résolu "Le Mystère de la Chambre Jaune"* et trouvé la solution à la question « Qui a tenté de tuer Mlle Stangerson ? ». Rouletabille, limier surdoué et raisonnant par « le bon bout de la raison », se retrouve propulsé dans une nouvelle aventure... Mathilde Stangerson et Robert Darzac fraîchement mariés se rendent en villégiature chez leurs amis Edith et Arthur Rance au Château d'Hercule. Mais Larsan / Ballmeyer réapparaît sur leur chemin et terrorise encore la belle Mathilde. Rouletabille, toujours aidé de son fidèle Sainclair, va mener l'enquête pour découvrir comment Larsan arrive à s'introduire dans le château-fort...
Joseph Rouletabille is haunted by the memory of a woman who used to visit him when he was at boarding school many years ago. He can still recall the fragrance of the perfume she used to wear and is convinced that this strange woman has some close connection with him. Before he can resolve this mystery, Rouletabille learns that his friend Mathilde Stangerson is in danger and rushes to her aid with his loyal friend Sinclair. Mathilde has just married her fiancé Robert Darzac and the couple are enjoying their honeymoon in the company of some friends in the south of France. Rouletabille is incredulous when Mathilde claims to have caught a glimpse of her mortal enemy Larsan, better known as the illusionist Ballmeyer. The world knows that Larsan is dead, having died on stage when one of his escapology acts went horribly wrong. If Larsan is alive then Mathilde has good reason to be afraid. Little does she know that he is much closer to her than she realises...

Stangerson et sa fille Mathilde habitent le château du Glandier où ils poursuivent leurs recherches scientifiques. La presse annonce la tentative de meurtre sur Mathilde qui dormait dans la "Chambre Jaune". Alerté par ses cris, son père n'a pas vu d'assassin dans la pièce qui ne comporte qu'une porte et une seule fenêtre grillagée. Le jeune Rouletabille, reporter à l'Époque, se rend au Glandier avec Sainclair, son ami avocat. Ils y retrouvent M. de Marquet, le juge d'instruction obtus, Darzac, le fiancé de Mathilde à la conduite équivoque, le grand Fred Larsan, un policier renommé, et un mystérieux "homme vert"...
At château Glandier, Mathilde, daughter of the famous inventor Professor Stangerson, is attacked in her bedroom by an unknown assailant. Who could want to kill her and how could he (or she) enter and leave a room which was locked from the inside? The police, led by Frédéric Larsan, suspect Mathilde’s fiancé, Robert Darzac, but reporter and amateur sleuth Joseph Rouletabille has another theory. Assisted by his loyal photographer, Sinclair, Rouletabille sets about solving the mystery of the yellow room and makes some astonishing discoveries...
