George and Martha are a middle aged married couple, whose charged relationship is defined by vitriolic verbal battles, which underlies what seems like an emotional dependence upon each other. This verbal abuse is fueled by an excessive consumption of alcohol. George being an associate History professor in a New Carthage university where Martha's father is the President adds an extra dimension to their relationship. Late one Sunday evening after a faculty mixer, Martha invites Nick and Honey, an ambitious young Biology professor new to the university and his mousy wife, over for a nightcap. As the evening progresses, Nick and Honey, plied with more alcohol, get caught up in George and Martha's games of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha's unseen sixteen year old son, whose birthday is tomorrow.

In the searing drama WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, a college professor and his wife play vicious emotional games with their unsuspecting evening guests. George (Richard Burton) is an alcoholic college professor; Martha (Oscar-winner Elizabeth Taylor) is his virago of a wife. George and Martha know just how to push each other's buttons, with George having a special advantage: he need only mention the couple's son to send Martha into orbit. This evening, the couple's guests are Nick (George Segal), a junior professor, and Honey (Sandy Dennis), Nick's child-like wife. After an evening of sadistic (and sometimes perversely hilarious) 'fun and games', the truth about George and Martha's son comes to light.
In 1966, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? went farther than any previous big-studio film in its use of profanity and sexual implication (it was the first American film to feature the expletive 'goddamn'). Thanks to the box-office clout of stars Taylor and Burton, not to mention the titillation factor of hearing all those naughty words on the big screen, the film was a hit, and it won 5 Oscars, including awards for Taylor and Dennis, though it lost Best Picture to A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. First-time director Mike Nichols lost the Oscar, but this movie gave him a perfect transition from his stage work and established him as a hot young Hollywood director, leading to his acclaimed (and Oscar-winning) work on his next movie, THE GRADUATE.

The film's title refers to Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), an influential British feminist writer who pioneered the 'stream of consciousness' literary style while examining the psychological and emotional motives of her characters. [Perhaps the 'fear' of VW refers to the film's characters who are suffering marital discord in the emotionally-draining film, and who may have 'known' that she suffered from mental illness and ultimately went insane and committed suicide.] The title is also a parody of Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?, a tune sung in Disney's Three Little Pigs (1933) animated short film. The names of the two major characters, George and Martha, are those of the first US resident and his wife.

Martha et George, la quarantaine, reviennent d’une soirée chez le père de Martha, qui se trouve être le président de l’université où George enseigne l’histoire. Tous deux sont déjà passablement saouls. Dans la maison en désordre, ils se servent encore quelques verres et reprennent le fil d’une dispute qui semble permanente. Sonnent alors Nick et Honey, un jeune professeur de biologie et sa femme fraîchement arrivés sur le campus, que Martha, sur l’insistance de son père, s’est vue contrainte d’inviter. D’abord témoins impuissants des règlements de compte continuels de Martha et George, Nick et Honey finissent par être pris à parti. Leur nuit sera longue et agitée...
