In director Randa Chahal Sabbag’s ‘fairytale for troubled times,’ sixteen-year-old Lamia must cross a border between Lebanon and Israel to marry a man she has never met. Neither she nor her betrothed are eager to consummate a marriage to a stranger—a matter further complicated by Lamia’s surprising admission that she is in love with the Israeli soldier guarding the border. Sabbag’s enchanting drama about marriage and tradition is underscored by delicate symbolism and artful references to politics of Lebanon’s territories that have been annexed.
Le jour de son mariage, Lamia, une jeune fille de 16 ans, va "traverser" les rangées de barbelés qui séparent son village de celui de son cousin. Entre les deux villages, une frontière et plusieurs tours de contrôle. Le village de Lamia est libanais, le village de Samy, le cousin, est annexé par Israël. Un passage ouvert sous contrôle des deux côtés permet aux mariés et aux cercueils des morts de regagner leurs différents villages d'origine. Lamia rejoint sa belle-famille, abandonne son petit frère, son école, son cerf-volant, sa mère, son passé, se refuse à son mari, et petit à petit tombera amoureuse du soldat qui depuis le premier jour la surveille.
