Criterion is proud to present Víctor Erice’s spellbinding The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena), widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country’s devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

Spanish director Victor Erice has only completed three films in a career spanning nearly three decades. This is his spellbinding debut feature, which was made towards the end of General Franco's dictatorship, but which unfolds in rural Castille shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1940.
Young Ana (Ana Torrent) is both captivated and puzzled by the screening of James Whale's "Frankenstein" in her village cinema, particularly by the scene in which the creature meets the little girl. Her elder and more knowing sister Isabel (Isabel Tellería) mischievously explains that the monster of the film doesn't die: instead he survives as a living spirit and that if Ana closes her eyes, she can summon him herself. Isabel also tells her sibling that he can be seen at an isolated barn, which is where Ana discovers a wounded Republican soldier...

"The Spirit of the Beehive" can partly be read as an allegorical account of a country living under the dark shadow of an authoritarian regime. In contrast to their lively children, the traumatised adults appear to have retreated into their own preoccupations: the father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) is obsessed with bees, whilst the mother (Teresa Gimpera) writes and post letters to an unknown person.
Yet in conjuring up a ghostly world, and in privileging atmosphere over plot, Erice explores the fears and anxieties of childhood. Shooting in muted golds, yellows and browns, and masterfully deploying shadow and light, cinematographer Luis Cuadrado creates some compelling images: Ana seeing the monster's face reflected in a pool of water, children jumping over a bonfire, the French windows whose patterning resembles a honeycomb.
Expressively played by its two young leads, it's a work which memorably captures a child's perspective on the mysteries of everyday life.

Like many of the other commentators here, I had heard about this movie long before I had ever had a chance to see it, although it typically is mentioned as one of Spain's greatest films. It definitely is. It is masterfully directed and I have not been able to stop thinking about it for days.

The story is elliptically told and demands your participation in making sense of the narrative, but it's also leisurely paced and allows you to breathe in the atmosphere rather than forcing a particular reading on you. One thing you wouldn't guess from reading the other comments is how this is as much a film about nature as about history--it is like a poem of the countryside in winter, with long vistas of stone farmhouses framed against the rising sun. The film with the most similar visual palette is Malick's "Days of Heaven", but that film feels simplistic compared to the full immersion in history and memory presented in this film--a much more complete vision of the past.

Ana Torrent is unforgettable. I can think of no better film about children, yet (as with so many other things in this movie) it doesn't feel forced--these kids aren't just the director's pawns, but real, living beings.

If you get a chance to see it, definitely make the effort.

Frankenstein's monster holds a peculiar place in pop culture. Old bolt head, perhaps because of his British invention, remains the grimmest of screen ogres. When you think of the revisionist fiend trinity - vampire, wolfman, Frankenstein - the green guy, who's really just a patchwork of dead people brought to life by a stroke of lightening (and genius), is the one who just feels heartbroken. Maybe it's because vampires (today) are so sleek and sophisticated. They scream Paris. They drip haute couture. Wolfmen are the beastly Eastern bloc grunts. The workers. They howl for whiskey. It's Frankenstein, forever embodied with Boris Karloff's face, which oozes despair. He's the monster who never really wanted to be a monster. The one who kills not for food, not for revenge, but simply because he cannot understand life.

The children who chase down Frankenstein's monster (the James Whale incarnation) in Victor Erice's 1973 film, The Spirit of the Beehive, aren't really after a flesh and black-blood beast. They're chasing down death. Like most children they're not only terrified but also fascinated with shadows. Like all children who cannot conceive of the finality of death, they are fascinated by death.

Its 1940, the Spanish Civil War has just come to a bloody conclusion, and a traveling film projectionist brings Whale's 1931 Frankenstein to a small Castilian village. Ana (Ana Torrent) and her older sister Isabel (Isabel Tellería) are enraptured by the film. Ana is haunted by the monster's sad encounter with the little girl that he throws into the lake (expunged from prints circulated at the time) and when she asks Isabel about the monster, her big sister informs her that Frankenstein's monster is a spirit. A spirit that lives in the abandoned outhouse on the outskirts of the village.

The Spirit in the Beehive is, however, not a film about monsters. Boris Karloff's grimace does not herald the coming of a brute beast, but is merely the black novelty of death. Ana and Isabel, in their own childlike ways, are merely discovering what we all eventually learn: What their parents, distant and traumatized, struggle to understand.

Ana Torrent (age five here) gives an incredibly honest performance, something rare among child performers. She's a stoic, cracking only one smile in the entire film. It's as though the weight of understanding loss rests entirely upon her shoulders. Her grim fascination is ours. Despite the melancholic theme of eventuality, the film is flooded with light. Not just the light of cinema but the beauty of the natural world: the amber plains that surround the village, the dusty blue sky, the hot sun. Cinematographer Luis Cuadrado, beginning his descent into blindness at the time, saturates the film in a gauzy mid-summer light, the images - each and every frame - a postcard from a wondrously quiet and peaceful place. (Cuadrado, robbed of the sight he so cherished, committed suicide in 1980.)

Long regarded as one of the best Spanish films of the 70s (you'd be surprised how many competitors there are), Spirit of the Beehive is a graceful and sublime film. Wispy, nearly silent, poetic in its approach to narrative, this is a poignant study of innocence and beauty, of death and rebirth. It's filmmaking art of the highest caliber.

The Criterion DVD includes a documentary featuring Erice, plus new and old interviews, all packaged in a handsome two-disc set.
