La particular visión que Welles tenía de España es recreada a través de los ojos de Don Quijote y Sancho, quienes viajan por la España de los sanfermines, las fiestas de moros y cristianos, la Semana Santa, etc. Esta película fue filmada por Welles a lo largo e catorce años y murió sin haber podido terminar su montaje. El director Jess Franco, amigo de Welles desde el rodaje de “Campanadas a Medianoche”, buscó los materiales que estaban diseminados por medio mundo y en poder de diversas personas, entre ellas la segunda esposa de Welles, Suzann Clothier. Jess Franco ha hecho una gran labor de montaje siguiendo las propias indicaciones que dejó escritas el propio Welles.
De nos jours, Don Quichotte, homme un peu fou, grand lecteur de romans de chevalerie, entreprend de traverser l'Espagne à cheval, accompagné de Sancho Panza, son fidèle écuyer, afin d'accomplir de grandes actions de chevalier et de conquérir le cœur d'une femme.
