The director himself crafted this release version from a barely seen three-hour-plus cut that reportedly filled in more of the wartime details. The result is that Morin and Barny’s conversations attain a metaphorically celestial resonance—the fate of the world seems to hang on every word. Morin is the ultimate winner of this battle of flesh and wills, though Barny is the one Melville keeps us close to as the characters retreat to their respective moral grounds. High or low, they’re lonely places to be.

La particular visión que Welles tenía de España es recreada a través de los ojos de Don Quijote y Sancho, quienes viajan por la España de los sanfermines, las fiestas de moros y cristianos, la Semana Santa, etc. Esta película fue filmada por Welles a lo largo e catorce años y murió sin haber podido terminar su montaje. El director Jess Franco, amigo de Welles desde el rodaje de “Campanadas a Medianoche”, buscó los materiales que estaban diseminados por medio mundo y en poder de diversas personas, entre ellas la segunda esposa de Welles, Suzann Clothier. Jess Franco ha hecho una gran labor de montaje siguiendo las propias indicaciones que dejó escritas el propio Welles.

De nos jours, Don Quichotte, homme un peu fou, grand lecteur de romans de chevalerie, entreprend de traverser l'Espagne à cheval, accompagné de Sancho Panza, son fidèle écuyer, afin d'accomplir de grandes actions de chevalier et de conquérir le cœur d'une femme.

This seriocomic adaptation of Mordecai Richler's award-winning 1997 novel stars Paul Giamatti as Barney Panofsky, who meets the great love of his life, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), at the most inopportune time imaginable: his marriage to his second wife (Minnie Driver), a wealthy Jewish princess and compulsive shopper. Narrated by Barney as a confessional, the film covers 30 years of his unusual journey -- from his first marriage to the chronically unfaithful free spirit Clara (Rachelle Lefevre) and their life in Italy together, through his third marriage to Miriam, with whom he has two children. Standing in the wings is Barney's father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman), who continues to stick by him as his loyal right-hand man. Through it all, Barney experiences numerous highs and lows, but manages to consistently surprise everyone with unforeseen acts of altruism and kindness that turn him into the quintessential modern hero.

 The movie moved me through it's no holds barred view of Barney's life. We see his imperfections and self-inflicted wounds even as he tries to build a life and family with his true love. Paul Giamatti wonderfully portrays a life though the stages from youthful and idealistic 20's through the difficulties of aging and confronting death. If you want to give yourself a chance to be introspective about your own path and the choices you've made in the various parts of your life you'll find this movie to be very moving. It is a movie that the 50+ crowd will find to be meaningful and honest. There is a lot to dislike about Barney and the way he has hurt others, yet there is a good heart underneath it all (as he yet fulfills the adage of being his own worst enemy). This was a wonderful movie, now I'm looking forward to reading the book and then seeing it again.

The story is set in Tuscany and focuses on a French antiques dealer, played by Juliette Binoche, who spends a day with the writer of a recently-published book on the value of copies in art (British opera singer William Shimell, in his first film role). The couple appear to have met each other for the first time that day, but as the film progresses it is left deliberately unclear as to whether they are a married couple attempting to rekindle their relationship by pretending to be strangers, or strangers playing the part of a couple.
