Narra parte della vita dell'archeologo ed agente dei servizi segreti britannici Thomas Edward Lawrence, un epico avventuriero conosciuto principalmente con lo pseudonimo di Lawrence d'Arabia.
Nel 1916, incaricato dal generale Allenby di contattare il principe arabo Faysal, nel tentativo di provocare insurrezioni contro l'Impero Ottomano, il tenente Lawrence conquistato dallo spirito di indipendenza arabo e dal fascino del deserto, convince le tribù arabe ad unirsi e combattere per la propria indipendenza.
Diviene presto una figura altamente carismatica presso gli arabi, e alla loro guida riuscirà a compiere imprese ritenute proibitive come la conquista di Aqaba e di Damasco, ma la politica delle grandi potenze in gioco sullo scacchiere mediorentale (il risveglio militare degli arabi danneggia l'Impero Ottomano ma appare in prospettiva una minaccia anche per le potenze occidentali) lo costringerà a rinunciare al sogno di condurre all'indipendenza i popoli arabi. Amareggiato e deluso, si ritira a vita privata, dove troverà la morte in un incidente motociclistico.
Il giornalista Jackson Bentley (Arthur Kennedy) chiede al tenente Lawrence (Peter O'Toole), impegnato per conto del Governo Britannico a fomentare la rivolta araba contro i turchi: “Che cos'è che le piace così tanto del deserto?” “È pulito”, risponde Lawrence. È in questa risposta secca, semplice, elementare, che sta tutto il fascino di Lawrence d'Arabia, tutta la grandezza di un film che davvero è diventato un “mito”. La pulizia del deserto, così mirabilmente filmata da David Lean (e il direttore della fotografia Fred Young fu premiato con l'Oscar), è una pulizia “esteriore” e “interiore”, che anticipava di qualche decennio alcune di quelle che saranno poi le tendenze ambientaliste alla New Age. È vero, David Lean raccontò in questo suo film la storia, un po' romanzata, del personaggio T.E. Lawrence, che, verso la fine degli anni dieci, sconvolse per un attimo gli equilibri politico-militari nella zona mediorientale e di come l'uomo Lawrence venne completamente assorbito dal mondo arabo, fino a trasformarsi egli stesso in un “quasi “ arabo (El Aurens, come lo chiamavano gli arabi), ma tutto questo è solo l'aspetto superficiale della grandezza del film. Lean, infatti, riuscì a catturare una sorta di essenza del deserto, che venne riprodotto con una tale ricchezza di particolari, di suoni, di visioni/limite, che Lawrence d'Arabia assomiglia ad una specie di “miraggio cinematografico”. Cinema/deserto dove lo spettatore deve completamente abbandonarsi, per perdersi nella sua totale fascinazione. Ed ecco i campi lunghi, Lawrence e la sua guida sui cammelli, con il deserto protagonista, ed i tramonti (e le albe) che segnano il tempo e le luci della storia. Ecco un cinema che sfrutta con il suo 70 mm lo splendore orizzontale del deserto, ecco un regista che gira lì per mesi, che filma una scena al giorno, che non cerca di commuovere inserendo storie d'amore pretestuose (anche perché la sessualità di Lawrence è storicamente considerata piuttosto ambigua e perciò Lean preferì sorvolare...), ma che ammanta il tutto con un ritmo a tratti lento e sinuoso, dove ciò che conta è il corpo di Lawrence che si immerge nel deserto, fino a diventare un tutt'uno. Per questo Lawrence torna indietro sfidando la morte per recuperare il suo aiutante (lo stesso che sarà costretto ad uccidere poco dopo per evitare una faida interna agli arabi): Lawrence deve essere una sola cosa con il deserto, deve divenire quasi un immortale, cosa ben evidenziata nella scena in cui il soldato turco gli spara, non riuscendo ad ucciderlo. E in quanto elemento “naturale” affine al deserto, necessariamente è vittima dei suoi riti, ma anche delle follie. E lentamente si trasforma da grande condottiero a portatore di sangue e di caos, che sfugge al controllo degli stessi inglesi. Insomma un film epico ed essenziale, fuori dagli schemi del cinema avventuroso americano classico, dove la trama, la storia, era comunque l'elemento portante del film. Qui siamo di fronte ad un cinema di “visione”, cinema di sguardo, occhio che mette in scena il mondo, magico e duro, del deserto.
Bene, di fronte al DVD che ha realizzato la Columbia dobbiamo ammettere di essere quasi commossi: raramente abbiamo in un unico prodotto tanta ricchezza e qualità di immagine e suono, tanta bellezza “riproduttiva” di un film che nel vecchio VHS proprio non riusciva a “starci dentro”. Restaurato anni fa con la collaborazione anche di Spielberg, qui viene presentata una versione completamente rimasterizzata in digitale che riproduce perfettamente il formato originale 2.20:1, che offre una colonna sonora italiana in Dolby Digital 5.1, oltre che a quella originale debitamente sottotitolata. Ma è sui contenuti speciali che Lawrence d'Arabia proprio non teme confronti, al punto da presentare il film in un doppio DVD (anche per la lunghezza del film: ben 222 minuti). Gli extra sono quelli che gli appassionati del DVD vorrebbero poter avere sempre (ma che è quasi impossibile recuperare se non al costo di grandi sforzi produttivi): c'è un documentario di oltre un‘ora “The Making of Lawrence d'Arabia”, un viaggio nella leggenda storica ricco di interviste agli attori e al regista; c'è un Dietro le quinte (“Vento, sabbia e stelle: Dietro le quinte di un classico”) che si occupa solo del set, dei luoghi delle riprese, delle difficoltà a filmare nel deserto; c'è una lunga intervista a Steven Spielberg, che racconta sia della sua visione da ragazzo, che dell'esperienza del restauro della pellicola; un raro filmato sulla prima hollywoodiana del film; alcuni brani della campagna pubblicitaria di lancio dell'epoca; un documentario sul vero Lawrence (“Alla ricerca di Lawrence”); un altro filmato sui cammelli utilizzati nel film, con persino le trattative con i Beduini; c'è un documentario sull'Arabia (“Il fascino dell'Arabia”), terra di storie antiche e di straordinari scenari; c'è un capitolo (“In viaggio con Lawrence”) che si occupa di mostrarci le mappe e le foto dei luoghi della storia... Infine c'è anche un DVD-ROM con un bell'archivio di immagini dell'Arabia, le filmografie e anche uno screen-saver.
Insomma un DVD da sogno! Che ci permette di rivivere in casa la meravigliosa esperienza cinematografica del film. Da non perdere.

It narrates the life of the archaeologist and the British secret service agent Thomas Edward Lawrence, an epic adventurer best known under the name of Lawrence of Arabia.
In 1916, hired by General Allenby contact the Arab prince Faisal, in an attempt to provoke uprisings against the Ottoman Empire, Lieutenant Lawrence conquered by the spirit of Arab independence and charm of the desert, convinced the Arab tribes to unite and fight for independence.
Soon becomes a highly charismatic figure among the Arabs, and their leadership is able to make enterprises deemed prohibitive as the capture of Aqaba and Damascus, but the policy of the great powers at play on the Middle Eastern chessboard (the awakening of the Arab military damages the Empire Ottoman Empire, but appears in prospect a threat to the Western powers) will force him to give up the dream of independence to lead the Arab people. Bitter and disappointed, he retired to private life, where he is killed in a motorcycle accident.

" Cinema / desert where the viewer must completely surrender, only to lose in his total fascination. And here are the long shots, Lawrence and his leadership on the camels, the desert character, and the sunsets (and sunrises) that mark the time and the lights of history. Here is a film that exploits with his 70 mm horizontal splendor of the desert, here is a film that runs there for months, filming a scene that day, that does not try to move by inserting romances spurious (because of Lawrence's sexuality has historically been regarded as somewhat ambiguous and therefore preferred to fly Lean ...), but that cloaked everything with a rhythm at times slow and meandering, where what matters is that Lawrence's body plunges into the wilderness, to become a tutt ' one. Lawrence goes back for this challenging death to retrieve his helper (the same will be forced to kill shortly after to avoid a feud inside the Arabs): Lawrence must be one with the desert, has almost become an immortal, something quite highlighted in the scene where the turkish soldier shot him, unable to kill him. And it a "natural" similar to the desert, is necessarily a victim of its rituals, but also follies. It slowly transforms from a great leader in carrier of blood and chaos, which are beyond the control of the British themselves. In short, an epic and essential outside the box of the adventure classic American cinema, where the plot, the story was still the backbone of the film. Here we are faced with a cinematic vision, cinema looking eye that portrays the world, magic and hard in the desert.
Well, in front of the DVD that has created the Columbia must admit to being almost moved: rarely have so much wealth in a single product and quality of picture and sound, so much beauty "reproductive" of an old VHS movies that just could not " stay inside. " Restored years ago with the collaboration of Spielberg, here presents a completely digitally remastered version that perfectly reproduces the original 2.20:1 format, which provides a soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 Italian, as well as due to the original subtitles. But it is the content which Lawrence of Arabia just to none, to the point of presenting the film in a double DVD (including the length of the film: well 222 minutes). The extras are the ones that fans would like to always have the DVD (but that is almost impossible to recover unless the cost of large production efforts): There is more than one hour documentary "The Making of Lawrence of Arabia" a journey into the rich historical legend of interviews with the actors and the director, there is a behind the scenes ("Wind, Sand and Stars: Behind the scenes of a classic"), which deals only with the set, the shooting locations, the difficulties in filming in the desert, there is a long interview with Steven Spielberg, tells of his vision is a boy, that the experience of the restoration of the film a rare film about the Hollywood premiere of the film, some pieces of the campaign launch era, a documentary about the real Lawrence ("In Search of Lawrence"), another movie on the camels used in the film, even with the negotiations with the Bedouin, is a documentary sull'Arabia ("The charm of Arabia "), a land of ancient history and magnificent scenery, there is a chapter (" Travels with Lawrence ") that takes care of showing maps and photos of places in the history ...
