The Doors 1991
A Film by Oliver Stone BluRay Rip MKV 02:20:33 14,60 Gb
Biography, Drama, Music USA

Val Kilmer delivers what was considered one of 1991's best performances as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's hallucinatory bio-pic of the seminal 1960s rock group The Doors. Stone cuts a jagged swath through Morrison's life, starting with a childhood memory where Morrison sees an elderly Indian dying by the roadside. It picks up with Morrison's arrival in California and his assimilation into the Venice Beach culture, followed by his film school days at UCLA; his introduction to his girlfriend Pamela Courson (Meg Ryan); his first encounters with Ray Manzarek (Kyle MacLachlan); and the origin of The Doors -- made up of Manzarek, Robby Kreiger (Frank Whaley), and John Densmore (Kevin Dillon). As the fame of The Doors grows, Morrison's obsession with death increases. The band grows weary of Morrison's missed recording sessions and no-shows at concerts. Morrison, meanwhile, sinks deeper into a drug-induced haze, having mystical sexual encounters with Patricia Kennealy (Kathleen Quinlan), an older rock journalist involved with sadomasochism and witchcraft.

IMDB

Jim Morrison, the lead singer and lyricist of the Doors, was equal parts poet, provocateur and snake-oil salesman. You might say the same of Oliver Stone, the writer-director (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July) who has turned Morrison's short life — he died of heart failure in 1971 at the age of twenty-seven — into a film of wretched and splendid excess. You expect in-your-face from Stone and Morrison. Both are products of the turbulent Sixties. The decade jazzed them, molded their sensibilities, taught them that art should be violent and dangerous: Feel it, mock it, even fake it, but keep it larger than life.

The Doors is a thrilling spectacle — the King Kong of rock movies — featuring a starmaking, ball-of-fire performance by Val Kilmer as Morrison. I can't recall a film that evokes the myth of the Sixties more potently. It's not all free love, psychedelic drugs and electric blues, either. The cruelty, delusion and self-destruction are included, along with the dopey hippie rhetoric. Stone goes to extremes — the movie is too much of everything — but the eerily alluring music of the Doors helps him capture the dark side of a decade.

In his 1990 book Riders on the Storm, Doors drummer John Densmore expressed fears about what kind of movie Stone would make. As a friend told him, "They're going to take your six-year career and squash it down to two hours and then blow it up to the size of a two-story building." Densmore had reason to worry. Stone and co-writer J. Randal Johnson, who based their script on eyewitness interviews and their own fervid imaginations, have done some squashing. Though Kevin Dillon is fine as Densmore and there is solid work from Frank Whaley as guitarist Robby Krieger and Kyle MacLachlan as keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Stone's movie isn't really about the Doors. It's a one-man show.

And what a show. With ferocious cunning, Kilmer shows how this introspective son of a navy officer put his past behind him (Morrison told the press his parents were dead) and built a persona as "the god of rock and cock." In his licorice black leathers, Kilmer's Morrison stalks the stage, spitting out lyrics to shock his audience ("Father, I want to kill you/Mother, I want to fuck you"). It's not art — Morrison's avant-garde posturing can grow grating — but it is great theater. Paul Rothchild, who produced most of the band's albums, supervised the soundtrack, which should send Doors freaks into Dolby bliss. (Kilmer's vocals are seamlessly meshed with Morrison's in a few numbers.) The film is also a stunning re-creation of the period — from the early gigs at L.A.'s Whiskey au Go Go to Morrison's arrest at a 1969 Miami concert for exposing his private parts.

Stone does little to soften Morrison's reputation as a user. Booze, drugs, blondes and blow jobs — the Lizard King did whatever it took to light his fire. The film focuses on two women in his life — Patricia Kennealy (a strident Kathleen Quinlan), a journalist whom Morrison bullies into having an abortion, and Pamela Courson (a wan Meg Ryan), his common-law wife, whose smack habit — she OD'd in 1974 — is tied to his indifference and neglect. If Morrison had a brighter side, you won't find it shining here.

Stone wants to uncover the tragic poet in the pop icon. Morrison's fatalistic yearnings seem to touch a responsive chord in Stone; the film may provoke charges of morbid glamorization. Lying dead in his Paris bathtub, Morrison has a transcendent smile. But Stone doesn't pretend to know whether Morrison did break on through to the other side. The movie stops at the grave. Stone never persuades us to believe that Morrison was a genius on a par with MoliFre, Proust, Oscar Wilde and the other artists resting in Paris's PFre-Lachaise Cemetery. But the flashes of brilliance in the film exert a powerful hold. Twenty years after his death, Jim Morrison can still convince an audience that he's onto something.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone Reviewes

We all know how legendary The Doors were and still are, and sooner or later someone was going to make a film about them. Might as well be Oliver Stone. Given the subject matter, Stone was able to go off the deep end with his imagery here to the point of making one have an epileptic seizure OR think they just dropped some acid. Either way, it's great to watch in my book.

The film is flawed in that it's not titled correctly. It's not about The Doors, it's about Jim Morrison and basically just the wild and crazy side of him. That's ok I guess, Morrison was The Doors. Many have criticized Stone for not depicting Jim in the proper light, but given how many people knew him it had to be an almost impossible task to please everyone as everyone knew him differently. I think we all can attest to this through the friendships we have with our friends. Some know us as one way, and some know us as another. I respect Stone for trying and feel sorry for him about the flak people have given him as I know he is a very talented director. I think his intentions were spawned out of true admiration and that he made this film for himself and to pay tribute, and not to win any awards. More of this can be found on the Special Edition DVD from Stone himself.

Even if one does not enjoy the trippy qualities of the film such as I do, or any part for that matter, one could not avoid admitting how well Val Kilmer portrays Morrison. It's simply amazing and is one of the best performances that I can bring to mind, and is the best example of how to literally become someone else, bar none. He doesn't act like he's Jim Morrison, he becomes Jim Morrison. He is Jim Morrison. This is no doubt helped by the uncanny facial similarities the two have. Not only that, most of the singing that's in the film was done by Kilmer himself and even a few of the original band members admitted that they honestly could not tell the difference between their two voices. Even if you hate Val Kilmer, this performance jumps in your face and screams for respect while trying to strangle you.

As mentioned earlier, some do not like the film for several reasons. One is that it makes Jim look like a monster and that it only glorifies his wild and uninhibited behavior. Two is that it's basically just one big acid trip into bits of history about the band. For one, Oliver Stone said it best....when you have to condense a person's life, a legend at that, into two measly hours you must take the highlights. Everyone lives longer than two hours, even Jim. We all know Jim was crazy, and with so many of the insane stories Stone heard while trying to piece together the script for this, a lot of what he heard was simply what you see. The wild and crazy side. As a result, what we're left with is not an accurate depiction of The Doors or of Jim Morrison. It is entertaining, yes, but it is not accurate. I think it could have been done perfectly, but it would have been excruciatingly difficult...and still not everyone would like it. And as far as the trippiness of the film, well that's Oliver Stone for you. We saw the same thing in Natural Born Killers a few years later. I personally like the style of it and felt that it was in place here but that's just my opinion. The '60's, drugs, and rock and roll equals trippy.

Overall a decent attempt at one of the most difficult subjects to cover, legends. And even though it's not entirely accurate and even though Morrison is one of my idols and he deserved a little better, I do enjoy the film greatly. The film should have been named Pandora's Box.
