Till I saw Samsara I never believed that movies can move mountains or change your life. Pan Nalin's Samsara did change my life, gave me confidence to make choices in life and in love. It is one of those rare movies which continues to grow better and better with time. It has an immortal story telling at its heart.

I waited for two whole years hoping that Miramax will release this masterly crafted film in the US (film has opened in 45 countries with huge success), which we Americans need so badly, but their website keeps on announcing new dates every month... Finally I got to see Samsara in Canada. Woooooo!

Open your heart and mind and let Samsara flood you in with positive energy. It is film-making at its best. I am a big cinefil, for me there is absolutely no great filmmaker to come out of India after Satyajit Ray, Ghatak and Guru Dutt. That was some 45 years ago. Would Pan Nalin be this international figure ? Time will tell. Many might not agree but Nalin's film falls in the categories of master directors: Scorsese, Coppola, Mann, Scott, Bertolucci, Bergman or even Tarkovsky.

Hollywood needs directors like Nalin, Anyone is listening in LA?

A Gypsy family travels the French roads during the Second World War, followed by Little Claude, a young boy seeking a new family after his parents 'left and never returned'. Theodore, the town's mayor, and Miss Lundi, the schoolteacher, protect and help the Gypsies. Despite this, They are arrested and placed in an internment camp. Theodore manages to rescue them and gives them a piece of property where they must settle. But the Gypsies' deeply ingrained thirst for freedom makes this sedentary lifestyle difficult to bear. After Theodore and Miss Lundi are arrested for resistance, the Gypsies decide they must get back on the move in order to remain free.

In a time when demons and ghosts threaten to bring total devastation to a powerful kingdom, betrayal from within the powerful ranks of the ruling emperor threatens to bring an entire civilization to its knees in this supernaturally charged martial arts epic from director Yojiro Takita. As dark forces hold a suffocating grip on a once powerful kingdom during the Heian period, the emperor employs the help of the Onmyoji in keeping the malevolent spirits at bay. Though the coming birth of the emperor's heir offers a glimmer of hope for the kingdom's future, an intimate betrayal leaves the fate of the kingdom in the hands of Seimei (Mansai Nomura) -- the most powerful of the Onmyoji.

Description: A pioneer of cinéma direct, Michel Brault ranks among the luminaries of Quebec cinema. He has worked as a director and/or cinematographer on about 200 films, including many classics. In 2005, he was awarded the Prix Jutra-Hommage for his body of work.
This box set in the Mémoire collection comprises 15 films on five DVDs and covers the '60s and '70s, a period when French Canadians proudly asserted their identity, and innovative auteur cinema flourished. Spotlighted are the stunning works Les raquetteurs, La lutte, Pour la suite du monde, Entre la mer et l'eau douce (Brault's first dramatic feature) and Les ordres (a winner at Cannes). The retrospective is rounded out by some lesser-known gems like Geneviève and Québec-USA ou l'invasion pacifique, as well as documentaries like L'Acadie, l'Acadie ?!? and Éloge du chiac, which zoom in on the social movements of the time.
Also included in this entertaining and enlightening set are background documentaries by Denys Desjardins (Le direct avant la lettre) and Gilles Noël (Le cheval de Troie de l'esthétique) and a 103-page booklet containing observations, critical commentary and newspaper articles published when the films were first released.
