Out in the wilds, an aged man tells his grandchildren a tale of his own youth. After his mother dies, his usually-absent father, whom he barely knows, takes him into these same wilds to hunt for a grizzly. They find a mother bear with two cubs. The hunters capture the cubs, but the grizzly captures the lad. Somehow, boy and bear bond and trek across the forest with dad and an Indian friend on their trail. After a while, the boy figures out where he and his new mother are going: toward her cubs. Rifles, dogs, hunters, bear, cubs, father, and son are headed for a rendezvous.

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro returns to the phantasmagorical cinema that defined such early fare as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone with this haunting fantasy-drama set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and detailing the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom. Her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), recently remarried to sadistic army captain Vidal (Sergi López) and soon to bear the cruel military man's child, shy young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is forced to entertain herself as her recently-formed family settles into their new home nestled deep in the Spanish countryside. As Ofelia's bed-ridden mother lies immobilized in anticipation of her forthcoming child and her high-ranking stepfather remains determined to fulfill the orders of General Francisco Franco to crush a nearby guerilla uprising, the young girl soon ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan (Doug Jones). Convinced by Pan that she is the lost princess of legend and that in order to return to her underground home she must complete a trio of life-threatening tasks, Ofelia sets out to reclaim her kingdom and return to her grieving father as Vidal's housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdú) and doctor (Alex Angulo) plot secretly on the surface to keep the revolution alive.

While the darkness of Grimm's Fairy Tales has been gradually sanitized by both the passage of time and the growing desire to shelter youngsters from the cruelty of the outside world, Guillermo del Toro has cut away the safety net woven by the overprotective powers that be to craft an intoxicating and original fable with the power to simultaneously enchant and repulse. After seemingly perfecting the melding of historical fact and imaginative fantasy with The Devil's Backbone, a horrified del Toro realized that whatever he thought he knew about war and death had been immediately rendered void when, just two days after the film made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, the world was forever changed along with the New York skyline. In the aftermath, the filmmaker would escape grim reality by crafting an entertaining pair of CG-heavy Hollywood actioners that, despite outward appearances, still weren't entirely devoid of the political commentary expressed in his most serious-minded work.

Now, after proving that he is capable of producing a slick hit despite a frustrating false start in blockbuster-land, del Toro has returned with a companion piece to The Devil's Backbone (a "sister" film in the director's own terms) which delves headlong into the subjects of fascism, brutality, and innocence with an insight he simply didn't have before the modern world plunged into darkness. Just as a film such as The Devil's Backbone couldn't have existed with the Spanish Civil War, a film such as Pan's Labyrinth couldn't exist without the apocalyptically titled War on Terror.

It would be impossible to tell a tale as brutal as Pan's Labyrinth without the balance of great beauty, and in the lens of cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, del Toro has found a collaborator capable of carrying his ambitious vision. The composition, color, and stylistic texture of Pan's Labyrinth suggest a fevered child's hallucinatory interpretation of an amalgamation of fairy tales. Of course, in order to achieve such a dramatic effect, the frame demands to be filled not only with phantasmagorical imagery but an exceptional selection of talent as well, and in Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, and Doug Jones, del Toro has found the ideal cast.

The initial innocence and subsequent shattering of a young girl who gradually comes to comprehend the inhumanity that surrounds her is heart-wrenchingly realized by Baquero, while Lopez inspires fierce loathing from his initial appearance and Verdú beautifully embodies the spirit of furtive, gentle righteousness right up until the moment she unleashes the fury that has been silently building inside. In his duel roles as the playfully menacing titular faun and the downright terrifying Pale Man, formally trained mime and noted contortionist Doug Jones continues the collaboration with del Toro that began with Mimic to striking effect. If there is truly a modern heir to the Karloff throne, it is almost certainly Jones, whose chameleon-like ability to disappear into a character allows him to instill them the kind of depth and personality that would be near impossible to achieve with even the most advanced computer-generated creation. From del Toro's perfectly balanced screenplay to his assured skills as a visual storyteller, the fearless performances of an immensely talented cast, the sleepy lullaby that forms the foundation of Javier Navarrete's score, and special effects that have the power to dazzle and horrify, all the elements in Pan's Labyrinth fall beautifully into place to form an genuinely affecting adult fairy tale.

Let's face facts...the Lifetime Network isn't known for the best drama's on television, but every once in a while they will put out something that is palatable to watch. The Road to Christmas was just such a film. I Tivoed it on a whim and found myself skipping through only the commercials. The rest actually held my interest. The chemistry between the two leads was good, the storyline not too unrealistic, and the comedic elements weren't heavy handed or doled out at the cost of the characters. Claire came off as a city girl but not bitchy (as many of these city girl meets country boy stories tend to do). Her sensitivity and likability as a character had you rooting for her to find a happy ending. And other than one semi-sappy moment which was scripted to state the obvious, I found this film to be a refreshing change from the heavily played melodrama's that seem to plague this channel.

Sağlık Bakanlığı ile Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu(SGK)’nun anlaşması sonucu yapay kalp paralarının devlet tarafından ödenmesi ölümü bekleyen binlerce hasta için umut oldu. Akdeniz Üniversitesi (AÜ) Hastanesi’nde sadece üç haftada 8 hastaya yapay kalp nakledildi. AÜ Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı Öğretim Üyesi Prof. Dr. Ömer Beyazıd, “Atık ölüm, kalp yetmezliği hastalarının kaderi olmaktan çıktı.” dedi.

Başarılı uzuv ve organ nakilleriyle adını duyuran AÜ Hastanesi şimdi de son dönem kalp yetmezliği hastaları için umut haline geldi. Nakil yapan merkezlere yapay kalp için de izin verilmesi üzerine Türkiye’nin birçok yerinden hasta AÜ’yü tercih etmeye başladı. AÜ Rektörü Prof. Dr. İsrafil Kurtcephe, hastanelerinin yaptığı özel işlerle hem Türkiye hem dünyada marka haline geldiğini söyledi. İlk böbrek naklinin yapıldığı 1983’ten bu yana geçen 30 yıllık sürede büyük tecrübe ve deneyim edinen hastanelerinin yüz ve çift kol nakli gibi büyük başarılara imza attığını ifade etti. Kurtcephe, şimdi de son dönem kalp yetmezliği hastaları için umut olduklarını söyledi. Kurtcephe, şöyle konuştu: “Son yapılan kalp nakillerinde Türkiye’nin en başarılı grafiğini çizen hastane haline geldik. AÜ, kalp hastalarına yeni umut oldu. Daha önce kalp hastaları verici çıkana kadar ölümle yüz yüze yaşıyordu. Şimdi o hastalar SGK’nın yeni uygulamasıyla yapay kalp cihazıyla bir şansa kavuştu. Artık onlar ölümle yüz yüze olmaktan çıkıp bu yapay cihazla nakile kadar yaşama şansı yakaladı.”

AÜ Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı Öğretim Üyesi Prof. Dr. Ömer Beyazıd ise AÜ Kalp Damar Cerrahisi Servisinde son üç haftada 8 hastaya üçüncü kuşak suni kalp cihazı takıldığını söyledi. Suni kalp cihazı takılan toplam hasta sayısının 12’ye çıktığı bilgisini veren Beyazıd, “Türkiye’nin farklı bölgelerindeki illerden gelen son dönem kalp yetmezliğindeki bu hastalara yoğun bakımda verilen tedaviye rağmen durumlarının düzelmemesi üzerine bu cihazı yerleştirdik. Bu tür cihazlar, kalp nakli hastalarını hayatta tutmak için kullanıldığı gibi kalıcı tedavi olarak da kullanılmaktadır. Kalbin tepe kısmına yerleştirilen 140 gram ağırlığındaki cihaz dakikada 7 litre kanı vücuda pompalıyor. Bir yıl sonra hastaların hayatta kalma oranı yüzde 90’nın üzerinde. Büyük kısmı bekleme listesinde hayatını kaybediyordu. Hastaların hayat kalitesi de oldukça iyi.” şeklinde konuştu.

Yoğun bakımda tedaviye rağmen düzelmeyen bu hastaların yapay kalp naklinin ardından işlerine ve ailelerine dönebildiklerini, aktif ve sağlıklı hayat yaşmaya başladıklarını anlatan Beyazıd, bu hastaların sadece 1,5 kg ağırlığında bel çantası taşımak zorunda olduklarını kaydetti.

Türkiye’de 800 bin kalp yetmezliği hastası bulunduğunu, bunların 3 bininin son dönem hastası olduğunu dile getiren Beyazıd, “Geçen yıl Sağlık Bakanlığı’nın bekleme listesinde kalp bekleyen hasta sayısı 500’dü. Sadece 96 nakil gerçekleştirildi. Yüzde 40’ı bir yıl içinde hayatını kaybetmekte. SGK ve Sağlık Bakanlığı’nın yeni düzenlemesi sayesinde bu hastalara suni kalp cihazı takmak mümkün olmakta. Normal yaşama dönebilmekteler.” ifadesini kullandı. Geçen yıla kadar hastanelerinde 51 kalp nakli yaptıkları bilgisini veren Beyazıd, bu hastalardan birçoğunun normal hayatlarına döndüğünü, ancak hala nakil bekleyen 48 hastaları olduğunu belirtti.

Türk Lirası uluslararası ödemelerde en çok kullanılan 18. para birimi oldu.
İmzalanan ikili anlaşmalarla dış ticarette kullanımı artan Türk lirasının (TL) uluslararası ödemelerdeki payı hızla büyüyor.
Uluslararası havalelerde bankalar arasındaki mesajlaşmayı sağlayan Belçika merkezli Dünya Bankalararası Mali Telekomunikasyon Toplumu'nun (SWIFT) verilerine göre TL, uluslararası ödemelerde en çok kullanılan 20 para birimi arasında bulunuyor.
SWIFT, bu yılın ilk ayında uluslararası ödemelerde yüzde 0,29 payla 19. sırada bulunan TL'nin payının şubatta yüzde 0,32'ye ve mart itibariyle yüzde 0,35'e çıktığı bildirdi.
TL bu dönemde Meksika pezosunu geride bırakarak uluslararası havalelerde 18. sıraya yükseldi.
TL'nin uluslararası ödemelerdeki payı 2012 başında yüzde 0,27 düzeyindeydi.
