The Sinking of the Laconia is a two-part TV film, first aired on 6 and 7 January 2011 on BBC Two, about the Laconia incident; the sinking of the former British ocean liner RMS Laconia during World War II by a German U-boat, which then, together with three other U-boats and an Italian submarine, rescued the passengers but was in turn attacked by an American bomber.

THE SINKING OF THE LACONIA Parts 1 & 2 - The two-part movie focused on the events that led up to and succeeded the sinking of the Laconia, a repurposed cruise ship carrying Italian POWs, their Polish guards, British soldiers and some civilians, and the subsequent rescue by their attackers, the crew of German U-boat, U-156.

Of course, a lot of the two-parter is probably heavily fictionalized for storytelling purposes, but the main body of the story – attack, rescue, and attack again by US airstrike – seems to be intact. And what a story it is. The Sinking of the Laconia isn’t so much a fully formed tale with a set beginning and end – as its 180 minute total running time may suggest – but more a snapshot of a certain time in the lives of the characters. The two-parter opens with a handful of questions and ends with even more.

The production values are high and the direction is minimal, no fancy stuff here that would show the limits of making such a big story for television – and it is a big story. There’s a U-boat, a cruise ship, the actual sinking scenes, hundreds of extras, and a bit of top notch movie talent mixed into the blend. This is not a B-movie in any way. It’s all so beautifully done that I found my mind wondering, once or twice, to consider why this was on television and not in the cinemas.

The acting talent is the best part of The Sinking of the Laconia. It features a great mix of actors of different nationalities that run the gamut from major stars (Brian Cox, Franka Potente), to movie up-and-comers (Ken Duken), to actors who are better known in their native country. The British and German actors in particular were incredible, but it was the portrayal of the Americans that left me baffled.

This two-parter, while dealing with serious subject matter, isn’t completely devoid of humor. There are quite a few chuckles spread throughout, but then the Americans turn up and everything gets surreal. The scenes with the rescued and the German U-boat crew, and those with the German officials, feel like a completely different movie to the scenes featuring the US pilots. Their look, manner and accents are like caricatures from some comedy sketch show, and instead of seeming unprepared (as I assume they were supposed to be), they just looked downright stupid. It was horrible to watch, jarring, and a flaw in an otherwise brilliant series.

Being an Anglo-German production, we were treated to seeing all sides (except the Americans) equally and fairly. We got to see the more human side of WW2-era German officers, and I’ll admit I teared up at the end after reading about the death of the crew of U-156.

If you can leave politics, and your feelings on the war, at the door, The Sinking of the Laconia is a movie not to be missed.

Sebastian Koch stars as Jack London's tough but philosophical sea captain in this two-part made for television mini-series scripted by Nigel Williams (Elizabeth I) and directed by Mike Barker (Shattered). Set in the year 1900, the story gets underway as hardened captain Wolf Larsen rescues gentlemanly landlubber Humphrey van Weyden from certain death at sea. Later, after pressing van Weyden to work on his schooner, Larsen forces the newcomer to join his crew on a dangerous seal hunting expedition.

“Sea Wolf” is a tense and action-packed two-part TV adaptation of Jack London’s 1904 novel. It concerns the exploits of a ruthless Captain called Wolf Larsen, his soon-to-be first mate Humphrey Van Weyden, and ‘Death’ Larsen, Wolf’s crippled and very bitter brother. The Larsen’s are competing tooth and nail in a Pacific hunt for valuable seal skins, and the welfare of their crews comes a distant second to a good haul.

Wolf (Sebastian Koch – “Black Book”, “The Lives of Others”) commands his sail ship ‘The Ghost’ with brutality, but his men - though terrified - are prepared to risk a mutiny when there is safety in numbers. ‘Hump’ (Stephen Campbell Moore – “Season of the Witch”, Ashes to Ashes) is rescued and thanks to his intelligence is soon promoted to first mate. Torn between Wolf and a back-stabbing crew, his survival hangs in the balance.

In parallel, the story follows the trials of brother Death (Tim Roth – Lie to Me, “The Incredible Hulk”) in his thunderous and troublesome steam-ship ‘Macedonia’. On board is well-to-do Maud Brewster (Neve Campbell – the “Scream” series, Party of Five). Maud expects to be taken to Japan but Death has other ideas, such is his obsession with beating his brother to the seals.

The plot twists and turns many times, and has plenty of variety to keep interest levels high for the entire three-hour duration. There is a suspenseful sea battle, tempestuous tussles with the unforgiving elements, and plenty of onboard friction and power-play. The characters are very colourful, as you would expect in this kind of adventure yarn.

Wolf himself proves to be simultaneously enigmatic and brutally direct; one minute he is beating crewmen to within an inch of their lives, whilst the next he is having a philosophical debate with Hump over a glass or five of brandy.

Koch puts in a commanding, multi-faceted performance, full of menacing physicality and soft touches. His moments of vulnerability are just as compelling as his violent outbursts. Wolf’s Achilles Heel is his susceptibility to debilitating migraines. He does his best to hide their onset and effects, but every searing episode is a tense window of opportunity for the crew to get the upper hand.

Campbell Moore does a decent job of conveying Hump’s transition from sea-sick, intellectual wimp to a competent first mate who is prepared to stand up to his overbearing captain, and capable of gaining some grudging respect from the cut-throat crew. Neve Campbell provides a refreshingly attractive female face amidst all the manly beards, and thankfully there is more to her character than simple eye candy. Maud’s relationship with Hump and interaction with Wolf creates an interesting diversion.

Surprisingly, the one off-note is normally-dependable Roth. The mini-series focuses far more on Wolf and The Ghost’s crew than Death and the Macedonia. Death Larsen does not quite convince as the embodiment of evil everyone keeps making him out to be; rather he appears to be more of a cardboard cliché next to his three-dimensional brother. It probably is not Roth’s fault but it is a shame that despite his ship’s technological advantages, Death lacks dramatic weight.

Fans of big-budget fare such as “Master and Commander” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, as well as leaner TV productions like Hornblower will definitely enjoy “Sea Wolf”. It is exceptionally well put together. Mike Barker (Moby Dick, Lorna Doone) directs with pace and makes the most of the ship environment. He captures and exploits both the vast openness and loneliness of the sea, and the claustrophobic, high-pressure confines of the cabins.

The constantly swaying camerawork evokes the movement of the ship without making the audience feel seasick. The production values are impressively high for a mini-series and everything feels very solid.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine dei Numeri Primi) is Saverio Costanzo s adaptation of the international bestseller of the same name by literary Wunderkind Paolo Giordano.
The title is explained by arguing that Matti and Alice are like twin primes: both lonely, close to each other but separated by an even number.

The film is set in Italy in 1984, 1991, 2001 and 2009 and jumps back and forth in time.

Matti and Alice (children in 1984, teenagers in 1991) are both traumatized, and therefore considered weird by the people around them.

When he was a child, Matti's retarded twin sister Michela died while he was supposed to look after her. He is intelligent and becomes a successful scientist, but he sometimes cuts himself on purpose.

When Alice was a child she had a skiing accident; she has a scar on her thigh. As a teenager she is teased by female classmates. She has anorexia nervosa.

They meet while teenagers and become friends, but lose contact when Matti start a doctorate study in Germany. Eight years later Alice writes him a very brief request to come back to Italy, which he does, and they reunite. They are attracted to each other by their common fate, but have nevertheless trouble relating to each other.

You have to be pretty stupid to give a children's movie a low score (for Christ's sake, it's for kids, right?). But to give a low score for a REALLY GOOD kids movie, you must have an exceptionally low IQ (and/or deficient imagination).

Well, this is a REALLY GOOD kids movie. It is about loss, magic, adventure, friendship, etc etc... I was totally into it right to the end, along with my three year old daughter. (Who in retrospect, was probably a little too young since it does get a bit heavy, at times).

The story is fantastic, the photography was beautiful, yet subtle and the casting was pretty much spot on.

Sağlık Bakanlığı ile Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu(SGK)’nun anlaşması sonucu yapay kalp paralarının devlet tarafından ödenmesi ölümü bekleyen binlerce hasta için umut oldu. Akdeniz Üniversitesi (AÜ) Hastanesi’nde sadece üç haftada 8 hastaya yapay kalp nakledildi. AÜ Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı Öğretim Üyesi Prof. Dr. Ömer Beyazıd, “Atık ölüm, kalp yetmezliği hastalarının kaderi olmaktan çıktı.” dedi.

Başarılı uzuv ve organ nakilleriyle adını duyuran AÜ Hastanesi şimdi de son dönem kalp yetmezliği hastaları için umut haline geldi. Nakil yapan merkezlere yapay kalp için de izin verilmesi üzerine Türkiye’nin birçok yerinden hasta AÜ’yü tercih etmeye başladı. AÜ Rektörü Prof. Dr. İsrafil Kurtcephe, hastanelerinin yaptığı özel işlerle hem Türkiye hem dünyada marka haline geldiğini söyledi. İlk böbrek naklinin yapıldığı 1983’ten bu yana geçen 30 yıllık sürede büyük tecrübe ve deneyim edinen hastanelerinin yüz ve çift kol nakli gibi büyük başarılara imza attığını ifade etti. Kurtcephe, şimdi de son dönem kalp yetmezliği hastaları için umut olduklarını söyledi. Kurtcephe, şöyle konuştu: “Son yapılan kalp nakillerinde Türkiye’nin en başarılı grafiğini çizen hastane haline geldik. AÜ, kalp hastalarına yeni umut oldu. Daha önce kalp hastaları verici çıkana kadar ölümle yüz yüze yaşıyordu. Şimdi o hastalar SGK’nın yeni uygulamasıyla yapay kalp cihazıyla bir şansa kavuştu. Artık onlar ölümle yüz yüze olmaktan çıkıp bu yapay cihazla nakile kadar yaşama şansı yakaladı.”

AÜ Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı Öğretim Üyesi Prof. Dr. Ömer Beyazıd ise AÜ Kalp Damar Cerrahisi Servisinde son üç haftada 8 hastaya üçüncü kuşak suni kalp cihazı takıldığını söyledi. Suni kalp cihazı takılan toplam hasta sayısının 12’ye çıktığı bilgisini veren Beyazıd, “Türkiye’nin farklı bölgelerindeki illerden gelen son dönem kalp yetmezliğindeki bu hastalara yoğun bakımda verilen tedaviye rağmen durumlarının düzelmemesi üzerine bu cihazı yerleştirdik. Bu tür cihazlar, kalp nakli hastalarını hayatta tutmak için kullanıldığı gibi kalıcı tedavi olarak da kullanılmaktadır. Kalbin tepe kısmına yerleştirilen 140 gram ağırlığındaki cihaz dakikada 7 litre kanı vücuda pompalıyor. Bir yıl sonra hastaların hayatta kalma oranı yüzde 90’nın üzerinde. Büyük kısmı bekleme listesinde hayatını kaybediyordu. Hastaların hayat kalitesi de oldukça iyi.” şeklinde konuştu.

Yoğun bakımda tedaviye rağmen düzelmeyen bu hastaların yapay kalp naklinin ardından işlerine ve ailelerine dönebildiklerini, aktif ve sağlıklı hayat yaşmaya başladıklarını anlatan Beyazıd, bu hastaların sadece 1,5 kg ağırlığında bel çantası taşımak zorunda olduklarını kaydetti.

Türkiye’de 800 bin kalp yetmezliği hastası bulunduğunu, bunların 3 bininin son dönem hastası olduğunu dile getiren Beyazıd, “Geçen yıl Sağlık Bakanlığı’nın bekleme listesinde kalp bekleyen hasta sayısı 500’dü. Sadece 96 nakil gerçekleştirildi. Yüzde 40’ı bir yıl içinde hayatını kaybetmekte. SGK ve Sağlık Bakanlığı’nın yeni düzenlemesi sayesinde bu hastalara suni kalp cihazı takmak mümkün olmakta. Normal yaşama dönebilmekteler.” ifadesini kullandı. Geçen yıla kadar hastanelerinde 51 kalp nakli yaptıkları bilgisini veren Beyazıd, bu hastalardan birçoğunun normal hayatlarına döndüğünü, ancak hala nakil bekleyen 48 hastaları olduğunu belirtti.

Türk Lirası uluslararası ödemelerde en çok kullanılan 18. para birimi oldu.
İmzalanan ikili anlaşmalarla dış ticarette kullanımı artan Türk lirasının (TL) uluslararası ödemelerdeki payı hızla büyüyor.
Uluslararası havalelerde bankalar arasındaki mesajlaşmayı sağlayan Belçika merkezli Dünya Bankalararası Mali Telekomunikasyon Toplumu'nun (SWIFT) verilerine göre TL, uluslararası ödemelerde en çok kullanılan 20 para birimi arasında bulunuyor.
SWIFT, bu yılın ilk ayında uluslararası ödemelerde yüzde 0,29 payla 19. sırada bulunan TL'nin payının şubatta yüzde 0,32'ye ve mart itibariyle yüzde 0,35'e çıktığı bildirdi.
TL bu dönemde Meksika pezosunu geride bırakarak uluslararası havalelerde 18. sıraya yükseldi.
TL'nin uluslararası ödemelerdeki payı 2012 başında yüzde 0,27 düzeyindeydi.
